A New Christmas Tradition
Giving Like Christ
The Christmas season often brings a whirlwind of to-do lists, shopping trips, and holiday parties. While these activities can be enjoyable, they sometimes overshadow the deeper meaning of the season—the birth of Jesus Christ and the love He demonstrated through His life. A few days ago, my friend Rob shared a unique tradition transforming how his family celebrates Christmas.
Since his children were little, Rob has given each of them a specific amount of money during the holiday season—not to spend on themselves, but to use in blessing the lives of others. This simple but profound idea has created countless opportunities for service, strengthened his family’s faith, and brought the true spirit of Christmas into their hearts and homes.
Inspired by Rob’s example, I decided to write the following letter as a way to introduce this concept to others. You are free to copy and use it as your own:
Dear [Loved One's Name],
As the Christmas season begins, I want to share something special with you. This time of year often brings a rush of activities—decorating, shopping, and preparing. But Christmas is much more than the outward celebrations. It’s a time to reflect on the life of Jesus Christ and His example of selfless love and service.
Christ taught, “It is more blessed to give than to receive” (Acts 20:35). His entire life exemplified that truth. From healing the sick to comforting the lonely, He gave everything He had, even His life, so we could find joy and peace. As followers of Christ, we’re invited to do the same—to look beyond ourselves and bring light to others.
This year, I want to challenge you to honor His birth by focusing on giving. Enclosed, you’ll find $100. This money isn’t for you to spend on yourself but to bless the lives of others. Think of how Christ served, often in small, quiet ways that lifted burdens and brought hope. How can you use this money to reflect His love?
Here are some ideas to consider:
Feed the hungry. Donate groceries or pay for a meal for someone struggling to get by.
Bring joy to children. Buy toys or clothes for kids whose families might not have enough.
Support the lonely. Create care packages for elderly neighbors or those in hospitals.
Serve quietly. Pay for someone’s gas or groceries anonymously.
The Savior taught, “When ye are in the service of your fellow beings, ye are only in the service of your God” (Mosiah 2:17). Imagine how He might use $100 to serve if He walked among us today. Follow His example, and you’ll find that serving others brings unexpected joy—not just to them but to you as well.
Christmas is a celebration of the ultimate gift: Christ’s Atonement. By giving to others, you’ll not only share His love but also draw closer to Him. Pray about how to use this money. Let His Spirit guide you to those who need His light this season.
I can’t wait to hear how you use this opportunity. May this experience help you feel the true meaning of Christmas and the joy of following the Savior’s example.
With love,
[Your Name]

Why This Tradition Matters
Rob’s tradition—and now this letter—represents a simple but impactful way to reframe Christmas. It shifts the focus from receiving to giving, from materialism to meaningful service, and from the hustle of the season to moments of reflection and love.
The dollar amount doesn’t matter. It could be $5, $20, or $500. What matters is the intent behind the gift and the opportunity to teach children—and ourselves—that Christmas is about Christ and His teachings.
This practice creates moments to serve and bless others as He would. It reminds us that even small acts of kindness can make a difference. It also fosters gratitude as we look for ways to help those in need.
If you’re looking for a way to make this Christmas season more impactful, consider adopting this idea. Write a letter to your children, family, or friends. Include an amount of money you feel is appropriate and challenge them to use it in Christlike service.
Let this tradition remind you of the true spirit of Christmas—the joy that comes from giving, loving, and following in the Savior’s footsteps.
Additional Tips for Starting This Tradition
Set aside time Christmas Eve or Christmas Day to share experiences. Hearing how others used their funds can inspire and strengthen your family’s faith.
Use the opportunity to teach children about the importance of prayer in deciding how to help others.
Consider keeping a journal of these experiences as a family to reflect on each year.
By focusing on giving during Christmas, you’ll create memories that last far beyond the season. And in the process, you’ll find that the Savior’s promise is true: “It is more blessed to give than to receive.”
